A space probe containing information about the human race is found by the alien galactic council. They debate whether to destroy the Earth or make humanity a member of the council. As a test, they will give one random human limitless power, \"absolutely anything\". After ten days, if the powers were used for evil, Earth will be destroyed.
Perplexed, Neil tests himself to find out that he can do anything. To fix the deaths of his students he wishes that \"everyone who died come back to life\", causing all dead people to rise as zombies; he reverses this, asking that the explosion never happened, reversing all previous wishes. Next day he wishes for another teacher, Miss Pringle, to worship his friend Ray, who is too shy to tell her he likes her.
However, this backfires when worldwide obesity flares, all land is taken over for houses, several countries declare war for no reason (as opposed to \"any reason\"), and the planet falls into a global ice age. Neil reverses all these wishes. Disheartened with his personal life and futile attempts to make the world a better place he attempts suicide, but as he jumps into the Thames, Dennis jumps in after him and Neil is forced to rescue the dog and by consequence himself. Afterward, Dennis says that Neil should give the power to him, as he never thinks of anything selfish. Neil does so.
In a March 2014, interview with Empire, Terry Jones spoke about the plot of the film. He described it as being about Neil, a teacher in a failing secondary school, who is given the ability to make anything happen by asking it to. He only realizes he has this after saying \"I'd make an alien spaceship hit class 10C and vaporize them\" to a colleague, only to hear an explosion elsewhere in the school and find 10C's classroom destroyed.[8]
Parents need to know that Absolutely Anything is a sci-fi comedy directed by Monty Python's Terry Jones in which a group of aliens endows a teacher named Neil (Simon Pegg) with the ability to make anything happen with the wave of a hand as a test to see whether humanity is worth saving. There's some crass/potty humor (such as a pile of dog poop \"walking\" and flushing itself down the toilet, or a man wishing for a great body and a big penis), as well as strong language (\"f--k,\" \"s--t,\" \"d--k,\" \"bitch,\" etc.) and brief nudity (breasts). Neil almost always uses his powers to reverse the movie's violent moments -- including people dying -- and he eventually becomes less selfish. But while he learns lessons about responsibility, friendship, and love, there are mixed messages about commanding women to love/worship men and the idea of clearing up one problem can cause others. Also of note: The film marks comedian Robin WIlliams' final movie role.
ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING is a sci-fi comedy that explores just how hard it would be to have the entire world at your fingertips. Terry Jones directs this tale in which a group of aliens (voiced by Jones and his fellow Monty Python alums John Cleese, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam) decides to test humanity to see whether Earth is worth saving or consuming. If a random human -- in this case, Neil (Simon Pegg), an aspiring writer and teacher in London -- can manage to do something exceptional with the power to do absolutely anything, Earth will be saved. But once he's endowed with so much power, Neil discovers just how precise his language must be in order for his wishes to come true as intended -- and, worse, how complicated things get when he's trying to make the world, or even just his love life, better. He makes a wish on behalf of his coworker, Ray (Sanjeev Bhaskar), for his faculty crush to worship him; but instead of falling for Ray, she literally starts a religion around him. Then there's Neil's own love interest, Catherine (Kate Beckinsale), whom he'd rather not command to love him but does so all the same. Neil also wishes for his beloved dog, Dennis, to speak, so he does; and his voice turns out to be that of Robin WIlliams, making Absolutely Anything (which was shot in 2015) the late comedian's final film.
\"Absolutely Anything\" is a decent, fluffy fun time that features the always likable Simon Pegg and a highly clever story. It falters because of some of the cliches thrown in every now and then and some jokes that really fall flat but I had a decent time with this. If you don't have anything better to watch then I'd give this a shot.
A comedy about a man with the ability to make absolutely anything he wishes for happen, \"Absolutely Anything\" is solid; but it is not as appealing as its pedigree may suggest. Starring Simon Pegg and Kate Beckinsale, directed by Terry Jones, and featuring the voice of Robin Williams, the comedy does not pack the punch that viewers might expect from said players. It is fun, however, and Pegg stumbling through the pros and cons of wish fulfillment is largely amusing. While the comedy is mostly forgettable, the experience is mildly appealing.
